Base Lab is a pond-side greenhouse at Maudy Lane. It is not a formal laboratory behind a door. It is a place where ordinary observations can become questions worth staying with.
A tadpole becoming a froglet became one small example of the REAL method: notice, return, document, compare and share.

REAL is intentionally porous. A question can begin in a community garden, a six-acre field, a classroom, a sensor, a fern spiral or a child's arrangement of stones.

Activity alone is not evidence. REAL records what was tried, what people noticed, what measurements showed, what changed and what remains uncertain.
Observe
Photographs, measurements, learning traces, field notes and community knowledge establish what is happening.
Interpret
We compare, question and verify rather than treating a fluent story or a single metric as proof.
Change
Evidence earns its place when it can influence what we do next — including the decision to stop, revise or try again.
Nature gives us things to think with.
Pattern can be mathematics, material, invitation and expression. The Commons grows from stars, stones, leaves, water, light, spirals and seasonal change.
Can we prove that REAL is a Living Lab?
We are preparing for evaluation through the European Network of Living Labs. We use the six evaluation areas as questions to test and strengthen REAL — not as badges to award ourselves.
